About the

author

Jonathan C. Robinson, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist has been in private, clinical practice for over 43 years, developing a thriving, general practice with children, teens and adults. His previous book, Teachable Moments: Building Blocks of Christian Parenting (2016, Morgan James Publishing, NY) became a resource for study in parenting groups prior to the pandemic. He used the pandemic shutdown to craft this second book, The Healing Journey: Overcoming Adversity on the Path to the Good Life.
A native of Philadelphia, PA, and the youngest of 3, Jon went south for college and to play baseball at Wake Forest University before getting his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Virginia. In addition to quality education, he found marriage, family, and home. He and his wife, Margaret, live in Athens, GA. They are the proud parents of two and grandparents of 8.
about the book

One way or another, for the most part, we are all lost, fumbling in the darkness, searching for light. What would it look like for such lost people to have a beacon of light, helping them find their way?

The Healing Journey: Overcoming Adversity on the Path to the Good Life is such a beacon. The Healing Journey uses lengthy, descriptive, emotionally intimate narrative to give readers a sneak peek behind the curtain of treatment and see just how effective therapy is done. Additionally, Dr. Robinson identifies a new treatment strategy, Mentalligent Psychotherapy, developed to help patients use their whole brain to address problems in their lives and create new neuropathways for sustained healing.

This book provides a powerful message both to the general public looking for self-help, and also to graduate students and practitioners of the helping professions as adjunctive reading to improve their treatment strategies.

about the book
Communication strategies for building a better relationship with your children, from a psychologist who has worked with families for over three decades.

Are you frustrated when your child is not responsive to your efforts to be a good parent? Are you shaking your head in confusion or barking orders as a last resort in getting through to him/her? Do you wish for more quality time with your child? Parenting is the toughest job—for which most parents have no training.

We tend to emulate our own parents, for good or for bad. In the Bible, Proverbs 22:6, we are told to “train your children in the ways of the Lord, so that when they are old, they will not depart from Him.” Teachable Moments: Building Blocks of Christian Parenting is a source book for parents and helping professionals who want both the spiritual context and the step-by-step practical parenting tools with which to be effective, engaged, Christian parents.

Are you ready to move from surviving to thriving in your relationship with your children?

Carmen Sauceda

I enjoyed Dr.Robinson's material in Teachable Moments. One of the most revolutionary concepts for me as a parent was this idea of having to lower the emotional temperature of my children in order to get to the teachable moment. It sounds like basic common sense but in the heat of the moment when I just want to exercise the "I'm the parents, listen up" statement - I've learned that we've got to get to the point where listening and hearing can take place.

Also, even though many of the tools are geared towards parents, healthy communication tools are useful in all relationships and can be tweaked to help you in other areas of life like your marriage, extended family, friendships, and work relationships.

Leigh Ellen Watts Child Play Therapist

I'm a child and adolescent therapist as well as a parent, so I like to think I have high standards for books on parenting. I don't want to waste my clients' time with books that aren't realistic or helpful, so I only recommend the ones that I value personally and professionally. Dr. Robinson knocks it out of the park with Teachable Moments. He's included a great combination of personal vingnettes, realistic approaches, and concrete tools to help assess how your family is doing currently. I'll be recommending this book for parents, and using the exercises as a resource with clients in session.

Brit Empowering tool for any parent, but I'm glad I read it while my kids are still young! I am MUCH better prepared to raise them now

This is a DEFINITE must-read for parents of children of any age. I have been seeking ways to better discipline, encourage, and motivate my children, and I am SO glad to have found extremely in-depth information in this book to help me with all of this. There is SO much more than I was doing, but I am glad to see I am on the right track. I LOVE the tools in this book. There are exercises for everything, so you can practice the tools he teaches and be sure you understand them. Another nice thing about this book is that it is CONCISE. It is not a lengthy read, so it is a MEATY one. I really had to take my time to process the information, and it was hard not to leave every page completely purple with my highlighter! Lastly, I am grateful for the feeling I get when I've tried "active listening" with my kids. I feel like I am doing something right, fulfilling, important, and enriching. Those moments feel very weighty; it's almost like time stands still. I feel empowered and more confident in my parenting skills when my kids work through their feelings or issue because of this technique. The only negative thing about the book was that the proofreader did a poor job, which hopefully the publisher will fix.

Dr. Jared Pingleton Solid psychologically and Biblically...outstanding parenting manual!

As a clinical psychologist myself, I have always told parents who come for help regarding their children that the major problem was that their son or daughter didn't come into the world with the instruction manual attached! Now we have a great one for those parents. The truth is, in parenting we do have opportunity to make an impact upon our children's hearts--if we seize and capitalize on those "teachable moments." Dr. Robinson has done an exemplary service to children everywhere in light of how this wonderful and innovative guidebook educates, equips and empowers parents to know how to effectively teach their children in those crucial moments. And as a minister also, I deeply admire and appreciate how Jon masterfully articulates how to integrate and synthesize Christian relationship principles into the everyday life of parenting. God has no grandchildren. The challenge for Christian parents is not only to know how to live our lives out in a Biblically healthy way in front of our kids, but to disciple our children in such an effective manner that they will themselves internalize and live out their own faith. The most important contribution of this excellent book is how to do just that. I highly recommend it both psychologically and theologically. You will want to buy extra copies for not only every parent you care about, but for your church groups as well.

Chris S. Consider the source!

In a world where wisdom is kicked around by self-proclaimed "pundits", you have to wonder who is actually walking in that wisdom versus regurgitating someone else's. I have known Dr. Robinson personally for almost 20 years. While he has written a book that is palatable for us to consume, it is important to note that this man and his family alike have overcome and are still overcoming tremendous challenges. The heart of this man is to equip you to be able to be like David who can take down the "Goliaths" in your family.

Dr. Jon has chosen to use a variation of formats to teach us mindful parenting. Real world examples including vignettes along with specific practical tools that will aid in both equipping you and gauging where you currently stand. Being an active listener is crucial in parenting especially for believers. It's not just teaching and correcting children...it's about being able to model Christlikeness and train up a child in the way that they should go!

D. Charles Williams PhD Psychologist and Marriage & Family Therapist and Author

Teachable Moments is a user friendly Christian parenting book with nine timeless parenting principles. It follows the Bowers family through practical scenarios in which a child, a teenager and a young adult struggle through the ups and downs of growing up. You will certainly be able to identify with the challenges all of us have had as parents trying to rear our children to be successful, healthy adults.

Dr. Robinson does an excellent job of equipping parents with a tool chest of techniques and strategies they will inevitably need. He utilizes applicable scriptures and biblical stories to support his parenting recommendations. It is very readable and offers great insights for parents of children of all ages. The exercises in each chapter help parents internalize and more effectively learn the principles within. Great job Jon!

Jessi G. Great clinical perspective!

As an educator and expecting mother, I found Dr. Robinson’s book insightful and applicable to positive relationship building with children. The book communicates a professional and biblical perspective on how parents can love, support, and guide their children. I appreciate that many of the principles in this book can also be applied to the school setting. The book outlines different stages of development and how adults can approach positive communication throughout each stage. The chapter on communication is especially strong in breaking down the various ways in which we can strive to be intentional with our words and actions. Overall, I think this book is easily readable and provides practical tools for both parents and professionals who work with children.

Margs Christian Parenting Resource

I am a therapist who specializes in marriage and family. I also have 9 children. I believe that the Appendices in Teachable Moments will point your family in a healthy relational direction. Christianity is often criticized for its judgment of other adults and children without understanding and grace. I am a Christian and I do not believe that is the message of Christianity and Dr. Robinson does a great job of explaining strategies to improve parenting while preserving/creating positive relationships with your family members that is neither too permissive nor too authoritarian. I look forward to a Facilitators Guide, so that I can build a group parenting program around many of the concepts in Teachable Moments.

Park Messikomer Great Practical Advice

The author writes in a very common sense and understandable manner with supporting biblical references. It's important reading for any couple before the birth of their first child. There are a number of great exercises to allow the reader to put theory into practice.

Heather Schulze Amazing! This is more than a book
